What Is Coaching?

Coaching is a specialized form of consulting best explained by describing the process and benefits. A coach:

  • Helps couples and individuals clarify their goals and focus on their needs, values, and vision in order to produce the changes they seek.
  • Motivates clients to achieve more than they would on their own.
  • Works with clients as they implement their plan of action, working through the inevitable challenges and obstacles.
  • Provides clients with tools, support, and structure to accomplish more.
  • Holds clients accountable to what they commit to do.
Simply put, coaching helps individuals and couples identify and bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
 
Coaching is designed to help functioning people set goals for themselves and establish the steps to get there in a shorter amount of time — with more success. Coaching is not therapy and therefore is not designed to “treat” people who are experiencing severe emotional and traumatic problems. These are best left to the professionals in the mental health area.
